Andrew Jackson OYLER b 1856 AL notes: Daniel and sons Frederick, George, Smith, James and Gilliam were fighting for the south, all as privates, Company H, 21st GA Infantry, Army of North Virginia. Daniel was discharged for disability a little over a month after volunteering. Frederick was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA., 2 MAY 1863. Daniels third son, Smith OYLER was a private when he volunteered July 2, 1861. Appointed 1st Corporal in 1864. Received by Provost Marshal General, Washington, D. C., a Confederate deserter, March 29, 1865. Took oath of allegiance to U. S. Government and furnished transportation to Springfield, OH. George was captured at Winchester, VA on September 19, 1864. Paroled at Point Lookout, MD March 15, 1865. Transferred to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange March 1865. Received at Boulware & Cox's Wharves, James River, VA, March 18, 1865. James Monroe Oyler was wounded at Cross Keys, Virginia June 8, 1862. Surrendered, Appomattox, VA. April 9, 1865. Gilliam, promoted to Corporal, was killed in a night attack at the Battle of Second Manassas, VA., a deadly battle in which seventy-six percent of the unit was lost. By April, 1865, when the 21st GA Infantry surrended at Appomattox, only 7 officers and 50 men remained. In 1880, Daniel, age 71 and widowed, was living with his son George W. and his family in DeKalb, AL. Daniel, son Frederick, and his sons Samuel, William and James are all buried at Edgefield Old Baptist Cemetery, Jackson Co AL. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * CHILD 5.................
