notes: Major's first two wives died early in the marriages. Gatsey Jones
and Mary Neese each bore one child, each child also dying very early.
Major was a member of the Baptist Church, a Whig politically
until the Civil War, a determined Democrat thereafter.
The Major Howell Cemetery is on the Giles and Maury County
line, which holds his and Marys stone, as well as hundreds of
fieldstones that mark graves. At this time, no one can be sure
of all that rest there.
