notes: John was too young for an official enlistment, but family legend
says he accompanied his father to the Battle of Cowpens and
fought there "like a grown man". John also served in the War
of 1812.
John served as constable and bailiff to the County Court in Lawrence
County, TN, while Davy Crockett was Judge. In his autobiography,
Crockett stated that he had attended school for only 2 weeks and that
his bailiff had taught him to read and write in Lawrenceburg, TN.
Even though he was an officer of the court, John apparently never
learned to get along with his neighbors. He was before that same court
on several occasions on charges of battery and affray.
His estate was administered by Thomas Blair. On December 5, 1853,
Thomas was instructed to sell the estate and divided the proceeds among
the family members.
