notes: Fielding was a co-executor of his fathers will, and received his fathers
land. Fielding left his own will in Orange Co NC, dated 27 FEB 1847,
proved FEB 1848. It mentions his wife, Nancy, daughters Mary and Nancy.
It also mentions "sons and daughters","rest of my children that has
married and left me."
Wife Nancy Wood mentioned in her fathers will;
James Wood, dated 25 AUG 1819, proved NOV 1819
"daughter, Nancy Lewis wife of Fielding Lewis"
Fieldings' land was deeded to son John C.LEWIS, inheriting the main
portion of land from his father, so he remained in NC.
Executor: son, John C.Lewis
Witnesses: Joseph Proctor, John Pool.
John Lewis was a witness to Ann PHILIPs Will, Orange Co NC
dated 9 SEP 1837, proved FEB 1838. He was also a bondsman
for several marriages in Orange Co NC.
Edmond Warren Lewis had a large provisions business as well as
a good sized grocery business in St.Joseph. He also had a large
plantation covering much of what is now south St.Joe. When Edmond's
father died, Edmond returned to North Carolina for his inheritance and
for the slaves he had also inherited and returned to St.Joe with them.
Buchanan Co MO Deed; Edmund W.Lewis 1 AUG 1848
Edmonds wife Sarah and daughters Virginia and Susan died as a result
of exposure after the Redlegs from Kansas raided their plantation,
slaughtered all their livestock, took all of their feather beds and
quilts and left the family without any means of getting and staying
warm in January/February, 1862. By that time, their oldest son,
James P.Lewis(who fought with the Confederates)had been wounded
and was in a prison hospital in St. Louis.
Sarah loaded all of her children(12 to 13)into a wagon to drive them
to St. Joe to the old Pattee House Hotel, which was the headquarters
of the Union Army, and also had warm rooms. Sarah died there in February,
of pneumonia. Within a month, Virginia and Susan were also dead of either
pneumonia, typhoid or diptheria - the descriptions said it was a "bloody flux"
that killed them.
