Ambien is a central nervous system depressant used to help people sleep. It is known to cause several side effects, and amnesia is just one of them. Previous clinical studies with Ambien showed amnesia (memory loss) occurred in up to 1 percent of people taking the drug.
Having amnesia, usually occurs for a couple of hours after taking Ambien. This is not a problem for most people because they are asleep. However, it becomes a problem for people when the medication will be used when traveling because they are more likely to wake up.
Ambien (Zolpidem), garnered unwanted attention with research papers showing unusual sleep actions, including walking, driving and eating, but not remembering any of it. This drug is manufactured by French company Sonafi- Aventis.
It has been known that eating aspects is included as a rare side effect in the warning literature provided by the manufacturer. Other activities while sleeping, all categorized with the eating as "confusional arousals," did not surprise doctors who specialized in sleep disorders.
It is known that a lot of prescribed sleep medications have amnesia as one of the pharmacological properties.
The effects appear to be rare though. The Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis did a research on the sleep-related eating disorder which identified 32 patients who apparently binged while asleep and not remembering it later. The research estimated that thousands may experience the effect, but has not been documented. The Mayo Clinic has seen similar cases but has no exact number, either.
It was advised that in order to decrease the chances of developing amnesia with Ambien, one should make sure that one can get a full night's rest. You should not take this medicine if you do not expect to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep.
